Chris Butler, known from the Gay Tarot, recently published his newest title The Healing Tarot with Lo Scarabeo. I had been eagerly awaiting my copy for a while, because I wanted to know if the premise of working with light & shadows and portals to a healing place remained simply a pretty but not entirely working concept, or would made for an effective tarot deck. Place’s new book is a companion for the Sevenfold, the TdM and Hermeticism I own many of Robert Place’s decks (granted, I love most, but am not equally enthusiastic about all of them). Strangely enough that has not translated itself into even one review, but I am sure I’ll rectify that at one point.
 Besides his decks I’ve come to enjoy many of his writings and books. Combine those two and you have the reason for this little news-item. Because….Finally, it is here! Well, almost then. Place’s newest book is coming soon and it is one many of us Place-deck-collectors have been waiting for. Not only is he an artist with a very recognizable simple but elegant art-style, but he is also an extremely knowledgable art-historian and tarot historian. His book Tarot and History is a classic (on the pile of my standard tarot reference books) and the companion for the Alchemical Tarot (AT), Alchemy and the Tarot, is unequivocally one of the best deck companions ever written. What if The Fool falls of that dangerous cliff, or the man in the 9 of Wands is given a helping hand? Maybe we’ve all asked these questions once, but they are now more relevant thanks to Lo Scarabeo’s latest release. Giula F. Massaglia’s newest creation, the After Tarot, shows us what happens next in an altered vision of Pamela Colman-Smith’s famous scenes. I am reviewing the cards-only deck in tuck-box, but soon there will be a sturdy kit with companion available. The tuck-box is a normal Lo Scarabeo type. Outside is a picture from the deck, and inside you have the cards wrapped in plastic, along with a small, multi-language ‘little white book’. To my hands the card stock seemed a little thicker than expected, but this could just be my imagination seeing as I was working with a rather flimsy deck beforehand. Anyway, the cards are on matte stock that is easy to shuffle so there is nothing in particular to say about the quality.
